Repair or replace? How to decide what’s best for your boiler

When your boiler breaks down, the cheapest repair isn’t always the best value. Here’s how we help customers weigh up repairing against replacing.

When a boiler breaks down, most people just want it fixed – fast and cheap. Sometimes that’s exactly the right call. But sometimes a repair only buys a few months before the next breakdown. Here’s how we help customers decide.

When a repair makes sense

  • The boiler is fairly new and has been reliable
  • It’s a one-off fault with an affordable part
  • The boiler is still under its manufacturer’s warranty
  • The rest of the system is in good condition

When replacing is worth considering

  • It keeps breaking down. Several call-outs in a year add up quickly.
  • Parts are getting hard to find. On older boilers, parts can be expensive or no longer made.
  • The repair is expensive. If a big repair costs a large share of a new boiler, it’s worth comparing.
  • It’s inefficient. Older boilers can use noticeably more gas than a modern, correctly sized one.
  • It’s the wrong size. Many homes have boilers that are bigger than they need, which wastes energy.
The big difference is the warranty. A repair is only covered for the work we do. A new boiler comes with a manufacturer’s warranty – 5 years on our most economical boiler and at least 10 years on our premium range.

What does a new boiler cost?

Our new boilers start from £2,500 inc VAT, and most boiler swaps come to between £3,500 and £5,000. The price depends on the size of your home, the type of boiler, where it goes and the condition of your system. That’s why we always survey for free first and give you a fixed written quote.

Our approach: your home, your choice

When we visit, we find the fault, check the rest of your system and explain everything in plain English. Where it makes sense, we’ll give you a price to repair and a price to upgrade, with the pros and cons of each. We’ll give you our honest view – but we never push. If you’d rather repair, we’ll repair it properly.
